Tihany Abbey

Tihany Abbey was founded in 1055 by king Andrew I, who is also buried here: his crypt is the only Hungarian royal tomb never plundered or moved. Its founding charter contains, among the Latin, 58 Hungarian words — the oldest that survive of the language. From the hill opposite, the abbey wall still returns an echo; a century ago fifteen were counted, today two or three.
